Nothing Vogue about it!

UNVOGUE.com is the newest online magazine on the block and it’s determined to stand out from the crowd. Its title says it all. According to K. Tyson Perez, the magazine’s Editor in Chief, UNVOGUE.com takes a unique approach to fashion journalism. Their mission statement/opening letter states:

“A magazine that dictates your every fashion move is UNVOGUE. An editor who tells you what you must have to be apart of the “In” crowd is so UNVOGUE. If you are clearing out your closet every six months because a journalist or stylist said to, that is sooo UNVOGUE… A magazine that realizes that its readers are of many races, sizes, colors, religions, economic backgrounds and that they too would love to see themselves represented in the pages they dash to purchase is so UNVOUGE.”

We love it already, although the first issue doesn't seem to portray all the things the magazine claims to be. Click here to see if you too are “UNVOGUE.”

It's ok. I hate online magazines that try to have the flip page effect and tries to look like a print magazine online. (it always frustrates me when the page doesn't flip easily). I like it when it's like a website with content. In my opinion, sites like Essence, Clutch and YMIB get the "online magazine" concept right.

SO not impressed. The photos are on point though. That's all.

Where are the people of different sizes? Still looked pretty elitist (sp.) to me...

Yea, I agree with urbanfashionista. The online mag that's like a real glossy is so overdone. Besides, this mag is whack. The pics are nice, but the concept doesn't even make sense. Unvogue? Yea, add "unreal" to that too!

As a fashion stylist living and working in New York City, I must say that I actually quite enjoyed clicking onto UNVOGUE. I think for a new start-up they are doing a fun and creative job. I even appreciate the rawness and fresh spirit of their efforts. I can still remember my friends leaving comments like the ones above when "Style.com" and "MySpace" were started.

  6. UnVogue seems to be contradictory to their mission, purpose and what they are trying not to be. I will be watching to see if they update bi-monthly as they state. But, I agree with the other comments it's just not well rounded.

  7. I will keep my eye on this one. Sometimes it takes awhile to find your niche and how you want to play to an audience. I didn't see much of their mission statement incorporated but time will reveal. Plus some of the advice was known, if you love fashion and read you already know about getting expensive pieces and dressing it up with cheaper theings, etc.....

I guess half the battle of UNVOGUE has already been won - everyone in the fashion biz seems to be talking about it (especially here in NYC. I think its young and cool. I hope it never does become SO perfect or SO Vogue.

Really people are talking about it like that. That's hard to believe. But, hey who knows.

Ugh, they have a typo on the first page. Where it says "editor-at-laarge" IN BOLD. That is not a good look! As for the magazine itself I am not convinced thus far, but I will keep an eye on it...

    Two Questions:

    1) can they use "vogue" in their name since it is a publication as well? I know it's another audience, but it is still a mag. If I was them I would be checking with Vogue's publisher and a lawyer, before they get shutdown before they start?

    2) how can one subscribe if you can't enter your email address in the subscribe box?

To answer the question above: it is legitimate to use VOGUE in the name of the magazine...Vogue happens to be a word... so the people at conde nast have no legal authority. There are several businesses (ie Vogue Eyewear, Vogue Nails) that use the word Vogue and have not shut down before or after they started.

question 2: The magazine is new give them a chance to work out their kinks.

This Mag is awesome and I can't wait to see what else they produce!

oh , i read all the comments!!!! I think it is hip young and cool... It doesn't just showcase the same designers over and over , or the designers backed by anna wintour . I guess you have to understand the fashion industry , so let me tell you this :
If you want to make it big in the industry ( which most designers this is thier dream , a brand a label which is successful) you really need to tapdance yourself into the right circles , you need some sort of pedigree or someone who is connected to you and supports you has the pedigree. Don't you ever get tired of picking up vogue , and rarely seeing real black designers ( ones who practice the craft ) showcased . There are a lot of talented black designers , and sylvia had showcased some on her blog , but u never hear of these people in vogue on a regular basis .

I say support unvogue , it sounds like a winner to me !

^^Well now that you've explained it to me I get it. I do think they should, over time, come up with more exciting ways to layout their articles - it seems somewhat "generic." Like I said before I'll keep checking in on them.

  16. I like the concept of "not being invouge" but the magazine looks like something I've already seen before.

And if the goal is to be the anti-vouge then they need to reach a broader audience...all the layouts and images look "too-young" - like it could be a "teen vogue" it wasn't grown up enough for me...I wanted to see an article on how I could update my 9 to 5 wardrobe you know? and I'm only 28 :-0

It is great to hear those to love to hate and hate to love comments. You really should applaud their efforts, most Stylist are focused on VOUGE not creating their own VOUGE-like Magazine. Because its the first issue there is room for growth. I believe they are headed in the right direction. I love both fashion Layouts they were creative and fun. There does need to be more defined because some might not understand. Some can only Dream of Creating Magic such as Unvouge, they created a reality. Keep Up the good work, and ladies be easy on them. What are your dream and do you have the HEART TO FOLLOW IT?

Are some of you kidding? This magazine is terrible. Let's start from the cover; that dress is terrible! That model Jordan Richardson is not at all the next big thing. Now let's get to the editor's letter; how unprofessional was it to be so ignorant and OBVIOUSLY jealous of the Editor at Large of VOGUE. They blatantly disrespected him and that was ignorant. I bet the people or person behind this magazine are upset at the magazine industry for not accepting them. Their fashion layout's are terrible. The men's one is OKAY but the bags in it are totally out of season. Both woman's layouts are terrible. I don't see how anyone over the age of 20 would find this interesting at all.

Don't get me wrong, I support them and hope they get better but it's TERRIBLE and I have to be honest.

I believe, and this is just my belief....but I believe if you are going to put out a magazine dissing VOGUE, you at least need to put out something of quality - PLEASE DO NOT RESPOND SAYING THEY ARE NOT DISSING VOGUE..IT CLEARLY STATES THE JEALOUSY THEY HAVE IN THE EDITOR'S LETTER.

This magazine is a joke. I really hope this K. Perez guy does a better job or get someone to help him who knows what they are doing because he obviously has no clue.

I am 26 years old and of course I would love to see this magazine become one of importance so the magazine has my support but I wish people stop beating around the bush and just say...The first issue SUCKS!...stop trying to be politically correct...be honest so they can fix the problems! If everyone says it's great..we will continue to get this low-budget, reject version of teen vogue

the posters who stated that it is not illegal to use UNVOGUE are wrong. The VOGUE publishers could certainly sue them. They would probably win too.
