Mimi Magazine

Angela Asare on the cover of Mimi magazine.

Mimi (the Swahili word for “me”) is the online magazine of choice for fashion-forward and culturally aware African women. Mimi offers articles on fashion/beauty, politics, love, the arts and everything in between. Features are carefully crafted to appeal to the entire African diaspora. If that isn’t enough, check out their blog written by Mimi editors and contributors. On the cover of their current issue is the beautiful Angela Asare aka Miss Ghana of 2006. The magazine has been around for two years. I’m surprised that I’m only just hearing about it now. Click here and tell me what you think.

  1. I'm really excited about all these publications that cater to the needs of black/african women because we were ignored for so long.

Women in Africa wear their hair in all kinds of styles. Yes we embrace our natural hair but we also wear it straight! I'm trying to figure out what you meant by such a comment?

Great magazine! Being African is about more than just your hair. This young lady on the cover is doing big things in the modelling world.

I think it comes down to hair, because it is one of the biggest in your face things that just does not celebrate our natural beauty...no matter how you put it. Nevertheless, I think Mimi Magazine does a great job in covering African Style & issues. In todays society..it is hard pressed to find non-relaxed-natural black women to put on magazine covers.

In my opinion, it depends which way you choose to look at the issue. If you decide to ignore the fact that we live in a world dominated by the caucasian ideal of beauty then what is the point of having a magazine aimed at empowering black women especially since it seems to be mimicking what they've already done. Its not very original, you may as well buy Cosmo or Glamour. You cannot runaway from the fact that this cover girl as pretty as she is has strong typical european features except for the colour of her skin.

anonymous: 8:09: I totally agree with you! Many times...I think we are our hair...just like our personal styles, our personalities, and our beliefs..all of these things make up the personality that we carry..and most tend to include their hair within that.

European features? Are you serious? Her nose and lips are as black as they come!

This hair thing is a very american issue. Yes other countries in the world where there are black people suffer the same stigmas but nowhere is hair such a hot button issue than here.

I think the beauty of our hair is being able to have a choice and not feeling mentally oppressed to stick with one style (straight). In order to move forward we must not persecute anyone because of their hairstyle. A person you see on the street with straight hair may wear it natural the next week but you would never know because you have already judged them!

  16. I agree with octoberwildchild. Hair is not just an American issue. African womyn would not be straightening their hair if they weren't emulating Europeans.

I still read the blog and link. I think some progress is better than none.

@ naturally sophia please believe me when I say American women are the ones who get their panties up in a bunch the most when it comes to hair!

@ anonymous 4:41 pm, MIMI is more than Cosmo, you already judged a book by it's cover because the featured model had straight hair. That is some straight up shallow thinking if I've ever seen any. MIMI covers issues that African women deal with which I guarantee that you will not find on the pages of any Cosmo or Glamour magazine!

  18. I really hope that Mimi will stick around since we just lost a great magazine for fashion-forward African-American women. Congrats to Mimi.
