I guess pigs are flying somewhere over Manhattan! I’m so happy for Miss Hudson, this is going to be her year for sure. Annie Leibovitz took the pics and Andre Leon Talley was indeed involved and even wrote the article. Head over to YBF to see more pics from the shoot and get more info. What do we think of the cover and other photos? I think it could have been better actually but Annie still captured her beauty, inside and out. Apparently Jennifer is the first black singer on the cover and the third black female celebrity ever... Can anyone confirm?

I think Oprah and Naomi Campbell are the only other 2 black women (and I don't think Naomi had the cover by herself, as I recall).
ReplyDeleteOprah definitely had her own Vogue cover, and I'm thinking the other black celebrities are Venus & Serena, who shared a cover. I think models, like Naomi or Liya Kebede, count seperately.
ReplyDeleteI posted earlier, but here is additional info.
ReplyDeleteShe wouldn't be the third Black woman. Unless you mean non-model celebs and even then, that's still inaccurate. There have been at least 3 black models on the cover (Beverly Johnson, Kiara Kaburuku, and Naomi Campbell)...this is to my knowledge, there could easily be others. I've been subscribing since 1992 at least and remember all of these except Beverly Johnson. Oprah was also on the cover. Marion Jones made the cover as well, as has Halle Berry. And I am only referring to American Vogue of course.
There's a list here:

^^ Great list! Are they all American Vogues?
ReplyDeleteBeverly Johnson was the first in 1975 for American Vogue. Longtime Vogue Fanatic is correct on the others.
ReplyDeletecongrats JHud!! they couldn't get a shot of her with her mouth closed though?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how many black models vs. actresses have been on the cover, various sources say different things. One thing is for sure, they don't put women this curvy on the damn cover!
ReplyDeleteYAAY, the rumors are true!!
ReplyDeleteI really am so very happy for Jennifer Hudson. I've been a fan of hers since her audition (when she sang a Aretha Franklin song. The name escapes me). She's come a long way, and she seems to be so humble. That's why I love her...she truly seems to appreciate these blessings that are coming her way.
I like the pose, and the smile. But I totally see how some can be put off by the open mouth. At the same time it seems so fitting, her open mouth and what comes out of it is why she's on the cover of Vogue.
Thanks anon for the list, I had wondered exactly how many Black women had been on the cover of American (I presume) Vogue.
Sylvia, could you do a Style thru the years? It always interests me to see how people's styles evolve. I know you've got a life outside of this blog, lol. But it would be cool to see how far some of our fave fashionistas have come. JHud would be great only because I remember some of her American Idol ensembles and now look at her, she looks great!
I don't have a subscription to Vogue, is it on stands yet?
great for j hudson , but the photos are not good . That photo does not exude power, the power of her voice. I hate to be a downer , but i do not see any love when the designers dress her , the clothes they give her do not fit. Is it because she is a large girl? Why is her breast hanging out in the silver dress ?? I guess that is why stars have thier own team , someone has to step in and say NO DO IT OVER.
ReplyDeleteThe Marion Jones cover was great and her photos were beautifully done!
As someone who isn't blessed with large mammaries, I shouldn't be discussing this, but ah well. They have Jen in high fashion (Carolina Herrera, Escada, etc.), and high fashion really isn't designed for people with breasts. So that's why she may look awkward.
ReplyDeleteAnd to that, she probably is a 12-14. Most high-end RTW stops at 12, but Carolina Herrera is an exception: I've seen size 18 CH, and size 20 Bill Blass, Chado Ralph Rucci and Oscar de la Renta. Those designers tend to have older/more classic clientele, BTW.
Although the mouth picture is a bit off-putting, I'm glad that Andre Leon Talley was able to get Anna Wintour to put Hudson on the cover.
Also, it's a safe way to address the stick-insect issue. Remember, larger Black celebrity women, e.g. Queen Latifah, have a much more positive overall public image than their white counterparts, e.g. Rosie O'Donnell.
I shouted for joy when I saw this pic on this site. I thought it was a rumor!
ReplyDeleteShe will be the first full figure woman black or white period on the cover of Vogue! I can't believe I'm saying this!
I just read "what's her name" got Sports Illustrated. Gawd...I guess she doesn't want Jen to have all the spotlight. So immature and arrogant!
I really don't think Beyonce is doing Sports Illustrated to one up Jennifer Hudson. They are both excelling at what they do. True, JHud is having an incredible year, but Beyonce is doing her thing also. Instead of pitting them against each other, let's celebrate their accomplishments and work hard for our own.
ReplyDeleteThis is wonderful. No matter how many Black women have been on Vogue, I bet, except for Oprah, they haven't been nicely figured women. I'm glad for Jennifer. Comin up in the world girl!
ReplyDeleteAnonymous, what the heck does Bey doing the cover of SI have to do with anything? So, Bey can't do anymore covers b/c Jen is doing some? That's sheer ridiculousness. She has a career too, ya know!
I believe JHud is the 6th Black woman, There was Oprah, Naomi Campbell, Liya Kebede, Halle Berry, and Kiara Kiacaru (sp?) but I think that one was a split cover. Mediocre photos aside, this is MAJOR for J.Hud, and I have nothing but positivity for this occasion!
ReplyDeleteBeyonce did her pics for SI in Nov/Dec. So JHUD's cover which wasn't decided until last month was no were on her mind. Beyonce is a business woman and this is great promotion not only for her but for her fashion line as well. Swimsuit designers battle it out to have their suits featured in the mag. So this is a great accomplishment for Beyonce on two fronts.
ReplyDeleteI am so very happy for J.Hud. She's the American dream.
ReplyDeleteBut I don't care for these pictures. This cover was a major milestone. And this is the best they could come up with.
Disappointing
I'm sure Clive Davis had something to do with her being on the cover.
ReplyDeleteIt's true about only three black celebs that rest have been models.
ReplyDeleteAshley that's a great idea! I'll lok into it ;)
ReplyDeleteJ. Hud actually said at the Golden Globes that she was a size 10, but I can understand the large bosom issue. I still think they could have tried a little harder to make her look as beautiful as she really is. They do it all the time for Queen Latifah and a number of other celebrities that don't come to mind right now.
ReplyDeleteI don't particularly care for Beyonce on the SI cover simply because IMHO it takes away from her talent and exploits her even the more as T&A. She's a beautiful young woman but I think she is over exposed in the media.
